In 1904, Reverend Joseph Angeletti was granted formal authority to organize this new parish in Kenosha, Wisconsin located on the corner of what is now 22nd Avenue and 55th Street. It was named in honor of Christ’s Mother. On November 14, 1904, the church cornerstone was laid. Official dedication of the new Holy Rosary of Pompeii Parish took place on August 13, 1905 with Bishop Schinner of Superior presiding. The original Holy Rosary Church would continue for 28 years at its original site, served by five pastors.
On November 23, 1929, W. H. Alford, a Kenosha friend and benefactor, donated a large plot of land on 22nd Avenue between 45th Street and 43rd Street extending westward approximately two city blocks. The new church was under construction during the years of 1929-1932. The Excellency Archbishop Samuel Stritch of Milwaukee solemnly blessed the new Madonna Del Rosario Di Pompeii on Sunday, October 16, 1932. The old church was renamed Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. In 1945, the Church construction debt was paid off. This was made possible by annual parish bazaars, fund raising drives, summer festivals, numerous card parties, church dinners, bingo volunteers and individual largesse. Two years after the church was blessed, the Augustinians of the Province of Saint Joseph arrived at Holy Rosary and would serve Holy Rosary Parish until 1975, when the Mother of Good Counsel, Midwest Province, came to Holy Rosary until the summer of 2002. Major renovations, upgrading and redecoration of the church was completed in 2001 as a result of the 1999 Capital Campaign, “Providing for All Generations.”
Holy Rosary School opened its doors in September 1953. The school was staffed by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamburg, NY under the guidance of Sr. Mary Scholastica. Today, we are still honored to have 7 Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph here at Holy Rosary School. In the many years that followed there were improvements to the gymnasium and expansion of the classrooms. Early in the 21st century, major repairs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars were carried out to insure the long range future of Holy Rosary School.
